Robert John Meehan said, 鈥淚t shouldn鈥檛 matter how slowly a child learns. What matters is that we encourage them to never stop trying.鈥 In special education, we focus on teaching reading, writing, and math but students with disabilities also need STEAM and social studies instruction as well. The STEM kits will introduce my students to problem solving, higher thinking and improve their fine motor skills. The art and social studies activities will help increase knowledge about the community around them, motivate them to be more creative and help them see how they are similar to the people around them.
STEAM and social studies instruction will help my students have more immediate access to the world around them. COVID has changed the immediate world around them. With distance learning, my students lost opportunities to interact with their peers and learning experiences. Using inquiry based STEAM and social studies instruction embedded with math, writing and reading instruction, I can plan and implement more positive fun lessons.
