Many of my students do not have books in their homes. We have tried sending books home, but because my students do not read yet, it is difficult for ELL families to support at-home reading. Listening center books allow my students to experience stories they do not have at home and provide a 10-minute story during classroom center time.
Every second is precious in Kindergarten. I cannot waste a single moment, which is why I use centers to provide time for one-to-one learning or small group learning while other students are actively engaged in other learning activities. My current listening center has only five pre-reader book sets. All of these sets are STEM-related. I need to provide my students with a greater variety of topics and build vocabulary in all areas.
