My students are enjoying their kindergarten year so far, but I know they could be so much more engaged. The problem is my classroom. It is functional, efficient, but still...basic. I want to make it a place of wonder for my students. Kindergarteners have a unique capacity for wonder, and I want to access that and use it to drive them to deeper learning. The first thing that would help would be a curtain I'd place over the built in shelves in the classroom. This would allow me to slowly reveal the games, toys, art supplies and building materials that we use throughout the year. Whisper phones so students can hear themselves making the correct letter sounds, legos to build endless creations, Magnatiles to work on letter formation and create all sorts of colorful structures. This would really enliven their unstructured class time and give them that much needed free exploration with peers.
