I am a speech therapist for one of the preschools in our school district. Recently, we've transitioned all preschools in our district to accommodate children of all developmental needs. While this is a change that allows for more children to be served closer to where they live, it does bring new challenges. The resources to accommodate children with specific learning needs have not been as easy to provide. As a speech therapist, my scope of children needing served encompasses a variety of those needs. Some needs include: sensory processing, language acquisition skills, phonological processing correction, articulation teaching approaches, story element introduction, vocabulary, early language skills, learning a second language, and play based approaches to encourage language.
My goal with my preschool students that have diagnosed speech and language delays is to: teach a love of learning through play, help regulate sensory processing needs, introduce books, and make each student want to work hard in a fun, safe environment. With sensory materials, books, and toys that can teach language skills through play, I hope to serve each student to the best of my ability.
