Living in a poverty ridden and rural community has enough challenges as it is. The impact of COVID-19 has not been light. The majority of my students will never have the opportunity to visit many places outside of their community, which limits how much they are able to learn about other places, cultures, and people in the world. In addition to this, some of them may be able to visit or have seen about things on T.V., but there is not much diversity, meaning there are not many different perspectives. This is where we rely on the experiences of others to bring them into our classroom to learn. We rely heavily on the accounts, experiences, and perspectives of others to help educate on the diversity, inclusion, and beliefs of other people in different areas. The students will have the ability to read these novels and be transformed to grow their minds and beliefs on topics they have probably never thought of or talked about before. In doing this, they will be able to have better-educated conversations with those around them. These novels will be used in small literature circles where students will get the choice of what they would like to read. As they work in these groups, they will be challenged to a higher level of thinking, breaking down themes, and challenged to think from a different perspective. They will share in groups, and once each group is finished, they will share with each other on different books they read and how they feel they have grown and changed throughout the novel.
