These materials will be used to help students regulate emotions. Fifth graders often struggle with new and fresh emotions that are hard to control. Although we teach self regulating strategies and have a school-wide calming room, it is extremely valuable to have a separate space in my classroom for this as well.
With mental health becoming a major concern in our schools and in our society, these research based tools and methods will be effective in creating a safe space in our classroom for students who need a "time out". This may be due to depression, anger, frustration, etc. Or even for just a student who just had a rough morning. The "Calming Corner" will be open and available for anyone who needs it!
The Calming corner will contain fidgets for energy release, a large beanbag chair for relaxation, noise cancelling headphones and an eye mask to help block out sensory stimulation, notebooks for journaling, a shower curtain to create a boundary for privacy, a yoga mat and cards showing exercises to help stretch our bodies and our minds, and many different resources to help teach calming/emotional regulation techniques.
