COVID-19 has had a significant impact on student learning, particularly in literacy. Studies have shown that frequent and consistent reading greatly increases students' vocabulary, ability to interpret meaning from difficult texts, writing, spelling, and grammar skills, and self-confidence as readers. Students are more interested in reading when they have choice and access to books. However, many students do not have access to books at home, so when schools are online, those students aren't reading.
Reading is critical in developing literacy skills in our students, and they need access to choice reading books even when schools are not doing in-person learning. This project will help me provide high-interest books through my classroom library. These are books that I encourage students to take home and read. Many students do not have access to books at home or through public libraries, and they worry about late fines when it takes them longer than two weeks to read a book. Having more books in my classroom library increases students' access to books that they can read in school and at home. Additionally, I can help students choose books that are appropriate for their reading levels.
I want my classroom library to be a resource to help students strengthen their literacy skills and find books that they enjoy. This project will help add books to that resource.
