In ninth grade ELA, I want to take the mystery out of writing. We are all writers! Students often view writing as an innate, inherited talent instead of as a very learned skill where practice and collaboration matter. I am requesting materials like chart paper, colored markers, and sticky notes to ensure that student writing can be a visible practice in my classroom. Instead of writing drafts in isolation, students will use chart paper and chart markers to write and revise together. They will complete the process for their writing tasks for Romeo and Juliet working together to determine the pivotal words and phrases in Shakespeare's dense speeches. The practice of isolating the most critical words and phrases helps students analyze a text and make a clear claim. Another misconception is that writing must happen in isolation. This is no longer the world we live in! Writing and thinking are collaborative efforts where ideas blend together and we learn from one another as we engage in the process.
