I am requesting a class set of The Mouse and the Motorcycle. In third grade, we read three homeroom novels. During the pandemic and being forced to go online, we were unable to do this.
Having one classroom set of each book and having to share books with other third grade classes made it impossible for our students to enjoy these literary devices. Moving to online learning, their education was negatively impacted.
We were unable to send novels home with students. There was a lack of technology access due to lower socio-economic status, and returning to school in masks hasn’t made it any easier. My students have suffered a significant learning loss due to the effects of the pandemic.
Novels can be difficult for third grade students to understand even without the learning loss that came from the pandemic. Getting these novels will have positive impact not only on student learning, but on my teaching as well. By having another set of novels, it will allow more flexibility with sharing the novels between the three third grade classrooms.
This will also allow my students to have individual copies at their desks and not have to share books with other students, which we were unable to do during the pandemic. As a result of the pandemic my students are unable to share copies, so the goal of reading three novels is not being reached. A new classroom set of novels will help solve this problem.
