One of the biggest challenges for my students in understanding math is their lack of number sense. Understanding numbers, that is, how numbers are composed and decomposed, how to manipulate numbers efficiently and accurately, how to recognize part, part, whole relationships, and how to see numbers in many different ways, gives students greater flexibility and comprehension as they encounter math problems and new math concepts.
Rekenreks (abacuses) provide a visual model that help students build numbers in groups of five and ten, use doubling and halving strategies, and recognize relationships that help them solve addition and subtraction problems visually.
Having a Rekenrek for each student in my class will allow a hands- on experience with number sense and will facilitate building flexibility in using numbers to solve problems. The students will be so excited to have a Rekenrek for each student to use.
