With students being stretch in so many directions the last two schools years, it is imperative to give them the opportunity of hands-on learning. Using the resources from this project, my students will be able to build inventions from people such as Leonardo Da Vinci to get an authentic experience of being an inventor during Renaissance. The students will analyze many of Da Vinci's creations, including flying machines, weapons of war (catapults, crossbows and parachutes) and the robotic arm (learning code). This entire unit will allow the students to discover how one individual, during the Renaissance, could affect their world today.
Students thrive on project based opportunities and chances to teach others about what they have created. Covid 19 took hands on learning experiences away from students in many different ways. They couldn't share materials or work in close groups which took this specific learning opportunity away from the students. This experience allows my students to not only learn through the creative process, but will allow them to teach others about what they have learned, reinforcing the knowledge once again! These hands-on projects will allow my students to connect to a world they have never seen or understand.
Students will be required to study and learn about this incredible inventor first through books in small group settings. This small group setting will be set up to allow students a comfortable seating arrangement (flexible seating) for them research comfortable and without anxiety. So much of getting back to school has been a rigid path of seat work, that it would be nice to give the opportunity for students to learn in an environment they learn best in and are comfortable with.
