I want my students to become empowered by doing new hands on activities that help them experience the scientific process for themselves. This project will give my students the opportunity to become student scientists with labs and demos that help them make connections to the world around them.
When teaching the layers of the earth & other concepts it is often hard to make connections to everyday life. The meteorites, rock samples, scales, and graduated cylinders will allow students to find the density of common rocks found in the earth’s layers. They can then make connections to why some rocks are found in outer layers and deeper layers based on density.
The formation of the Universe and elements, it is hard for students to visualize the energy that it takes for elements to fuse and form larger elements. The magnetic balls will allow them to visualize this energy on a small scale.
Providing water for astronauts in space is a common engineering problem. Students will be able to practice this process by researching and building their own water filters and water distillers. The water conductivity meters will allow students to test water that they have filtered or distilled. The hotplates will provide the heat source for their water distillers.
The Earth’s magnetic field is hard for students to visualize when they cannot see it. The magnetic field demonstrator as well as the metal filings and magnets will allow them to visualize the magnetic field.
The centrifuge tubes will be used for students to take samples from DNA extraction labs or other lab samples home to then show and teach their families about what they have learned.
The letter trays, Tupperware, caddies, broom, mop and wall mount will help with cleaning and organizing labs.
