My students are diverse and many face a variety of challenges at home, where support and resources may be lacking. In my 7th grade English classes, I sometimes feel that they need more than I have to give. However, one very valuable thing I always work on giving them is a love of reading. However, our class novel sets are out of date (My Brother Sam is Dead, Witch of Blackbird Pond, etc.) and do not reflect my student's interests or their diversity. They do not see themselves in these books. I have one copy of Crossover in my classroom and it is always out...the students love it. It will be a wonderful class novel to use for a step into poetry that they won't hate. A Long Walk to Water is a wonderful novel that some have read, and I will be using it to teach memoir and tie into some of the difficult themes that some of my students face every day, such as immigration, survival, the importance of family.
