The use of manipulatives in our kindergarten classroom is a daily thing. Our manipulatives allow the students to learn through building, counting, matching, sorting, and best of all, through playing. My kindergarten classroom has several English Language Learners, and the use of manipulatives, especially the ones that you see in the alphabet tubs, help to build their vocabulary and oral language.
Play is a developmentally appropriate and exciting way for kindergarten students to learn to read, do math, and work with others. Many different kinds of manipulatives and games allow these kindergarten students to learn in different ways. Being able to have autonomy and choice as they play and learn will help them to learn everything in a meaningful way that they will remember.
