While the main focus of my job is helping students adjust behavior to be successful in the classroom, the world is focusing more on mental health and my students are no exception. With the items I have requested, like the lamp and bean bag chair, I will be able to create a safe and calming space for any student who feels over whelmed. As we all know, when a student is experiencing a fight or flight response, the best way to de-escalate the situation is to first create an environment so then we can help the students work through their feelings. The items requested can turn my office into the stress free environment the students need in those times of crisis. The fidgets will allow them to take a mental break from any stress they are feeling as well as provide reinforcement when as goals are met. In my experience, I have also noticed better communication when these fidgets are being used. This communication allows me to get to know my students better which helps my team develop appropriate, individualized plans. It will be nice for students to know, no matter what choices were made earlier in the day, they will have a space that will allow them a chance to renew, refresh, and get a fresh start.
