Students will inevitably exhibit behaviors in class, yet there are few areas for them students to practice their coping skills. A 鈥渃alm-corner,鈥 equipped with a carpet, tangibles (books, slime, drawing pad, plush animals), and a divider (bookshelf, room divider) that represents a safe space. This tool will allow students to stay in the classroom, rather than be sent to the office or counselor.
I am asking for assistance in expanding the calm corner in my classroom. This is a safe space where students can work on their coping skills to manage their emotions and promote wellness. There are instances when students become frustrated during a class activity or with peer interactions at lunch or P.E. It gives them the space to adjust, refocus, and restart!!!
I currently have a small carpet and one rocking chair. As my roster has grown, a much larger 鈥渟afe space鈥 would greatly benefit my students with their social emotional needs and overall academic performance.
