Since COVID-19 many of my students have found reading to now be a chore. Students in my class faced the challenges of the pandemic in their lower grades; in which teachers help inspire the love for reading causing many students to miss out on understanding what reading can do. Lots of my students have lost the passion and no longer view reading as a fun experience to explore new places.
In order to bring back the joy in reading and promote positive grade level books our school participates in an upper grade Battle of the Books, and our class currently has a limited amount accessible. The Battle of the Books competition encourages students to read a variety of genres and includes eighteen books. Often times students have the desire to go read a Battle of the Book but it is being used with the one copy we have in our classroom or it is already checked out from the school library.
Not only would having more copies of the Battle of the Books in our room promote opportunities to read, but also having safe places to read will create an environment in which students will want to read. Since students in my room often want to find a space to "make their own" to read, I have included seat cushions to create a comfortable environment in hopes that it will encourage them to find new places to read and promote reading across all locations. Privacy shields have been included in this project to allow students the opportunity to create a private corner to feel safe and secure while reading.
Having these additions to our limited classroom library will allow ALL students to fall in love with reading again.
