Before becoming a teacher I was a journalist, because of this I have always had a passion for the written word. I take this passion into my classroom to give students enjoyable activities in their writing. Writing is an excellent way for students to express themselves and use their imagination. It is a way to deal with hardships and document important events in ones life. Sadly, through distance learning the ability to write has been delayed for many of my students. Finding ways to make them enjoy writing has been a struggle. Because of this I want us to write a class book that I will get published. Each student will get to write and illustrate a page in this book. I can then get a hard copy for each student so they forever have a memory of their year in second grade and what we all came together to create.
Our book project will teach students about the writing process, what it means to be an author, and overall provide a sense of ownership towards something they can be proud of. I want to also incorporate many reading activities along the way. Many of my students are below grade level in their reading abilities and by incorporating reading skill activities into an engaging project I can get better outcomes and more work ethic out of my students. All the money for this project will go to the tools needed for my students to raise their reading levels, increase their writing skills, and create something they can be proud of!
Overall, I want them to look back at this year as not one filled with hardships, but as one where they grew and never gave up. Engaging projects are the way to ensure this mentality for all students. Thank you!
