Throughout the pandemic, students have been forced to social distance. This has caused isolation and depression in many students, leading to a struggle to engage. Music has helped students get through their day. Many of my students have told me that they look forward to my class.
Music offers students an opportunity to actively engage with one another daily. They become a community with a shared goal of coming together to make beautiful music. The sheet music in this project will help facilitate that sense of community. As students learn the music, they use highlighters to help them concentrate on their particular voice part. Many music publishers print sheet music without any bindings, so the stapler will be used to secure the pages of music together. Students are encouraged to mark instructions and their own thoughts about the music in pencil, therefore necessitating the pencil sharpener.
The ability to read rhythms and melodies is essential to learning and creating music. The Melody Bingo game and Rhythm Band Drums Instrument kits will make learning these skills fun, entertaining, and memorable for the students. These skills are necessary for choral singing, as well as solo singing. During the spring, students are encouraged to participate in the OSSAA Solo/Ensemble contest. The Folk Songs for Solo Singers books offer many selections for this contest that the students can use the music stands for in class rehearsals.
Technology has come to be a vital part of students’ education. Our students have Chromebooks and use Google Classroom as an online learning tool, both when we have a virtual learning day, and as a supplement to in person learning. My general music students are regularly assigned a Google Doc study guide that they complete during the classroom discussion via a slide presentation on our display boards. I
