To make literacy more engaging, my students would love sets of books for small group book studies (literature circles), activities to work on independently during guided reading, and materials for book projects. I would like to use book study groups or literature circles to encourage student discussion of books and promote literacy.
Students would be working collaboratively and building essential skills in reading. They can develop their fluency, increase vocabulary, and work on their critical reading skills. Along with the book sets, I would like students to have materials for projects based on their books and interactive activities to use during group time.
I would use the literacy and interactive, hands-on activities to differentiate independent activities to meet the needs of individual students as well as have them work collaboratively. This would give students the opportunity to connect with what they are learning. It would encourage them to use critical thinking skills and promote creative thinking.
In developing these skills, students will be able to fill in learning gaps that have grown due to impacts from COVID. My students love to learn using these kinds of activities and they feel connected to what they are learning.
