To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I could incorporate historical fiction novels into my social studies curriculum. Due to the pandemic, students haven’t had a full complete school year since second grade. Due to the distribution of schools, students have some academic gaps.
One way I am trying to combat the gaps is to try and incorporate English Language Arts into my social studies curriculum while covering the social studies standards. Plus while reading historical fiction novels, students are engaging in the historical aspect of social studies while incorporating the English Language Arts skills. Also while reading the books, students are learning about history from a child’s perspective which in turn makes the learning even more meaningful and impactful.
