By adding physical maps students develop critical thinking skills that require students to evaluate and predict the recorded outcomes, and how the outcomes shaped our country. With the addition of wet-erase markers, maps can become manipulatives that stimulate growth on both sides of the brain. Students who are engaged with their hands and their minds, they actually are more focused and motivated to learn. This map option can be paired with a digital component to reinforce knowledge retention.
My target population will be the 8th grade students in my class. However the material can be used in my 6th and 7th grade courses as an exploratory learning option. In addition, our small campus allows us to share materials easily with the special education team in order to reinforce content for older learners.
As a result of a hands-on learning unit, students can increase their understanding of our country up through the Civil War while increasing their knowledge of geography and early communities. Students will also engage in critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills that can be utilized throughout their learning experience.
