Due to the instruction time disruptions during the pandemic, most of my students are reading on a lower than expected reading level. The time they lost in class was frequently replaced with fast-paced visual stimulation such as social media at home. As a result, the kids have an abbreviated attention span. High-interest graphic novels will engage sagging interest levels and help kids who are decoding the meaning of words have relatable context clues so they don't get overwhelmed and give up on a book. This benefit would also apply to the large number of English Language Learners our school serves. The class set of "The Silence of Our Friends" will be used as an honors student companion novel for "The Watsons Go To Birmingham" - a grade-level novel study our school uses every year.
