In the midst of a pandemic, my students have gone through many hardships, one of the biggest being loneliness. When we were shut in, our students faced the tribulations of being forced to be anti-social. They also were subject to the influences of differences of opinions. Where the pandemic attempted to divide us, I would like to have the opportunity to help embrace differences in my classroom through literature.
My hope is that these books, notebooks, and a podium will help my students gain perspective by experiencing other people's hardships through literature.
I teach both 9th and 11th grade, so you will see that I have a lot of books in my request. With my 9th grade students I would like to create a unit reading Historical Fiction with the theme, "Does our experience/past define us?" With my 11th graders, I would like to have a variety of texts that help us understand that differences are good with the unit theme, "Do our differences define us?"
