Throughout our school year, we have been learning about environments. We have learned what an environment is, how we and animals affect our environment, about ecosystems and habitats.
My students are currently researching animals and their environments and habitats. I want students to create their own ecosystems using household materials that we continuously collect along with the materials requested in this grant. Students will design their environment in a shoebox or similar box. Students will use the clay to make their animals. The items such as Wikki sticks, pipe cleaners, construction paper will be perfect for students to create all the things that will be included in their animals' environment: trees, plants, streams, waves, rocks, clouds, etc. Once the environments have been created, students will present their environment to their peers.
My goal is that students' imagination and enthusiasm are heightened, their critical and creative thinking skills are enhanced, and students feel empowered to change their own environments when needed. My students will better understand their own environment, the environment of the specific animal researched, have some knowledge of the environments and animals that were shared by their classmates, have awareness of issues impacting the environment and know actions that can be taken to help improve and sustain it.
