During the pandemic, one difficulty that we have experienced is getting hands on-time in the lab. We have had to go virtual several times, and unlike some other things, labs cannot always be safety performed at home without supervision. That is unfortunate because one of the most engaging things about science is the ability to get hands on.
Students need their learning grounded in scientific phenomena. For that reason it is important that we make the best use possible of the time we have. In that vein, I am requesting laboratory kits for my classroom. Using these kits students observe electrical flow, model parallel and series circuits, as well as get a jumping off point to discuss electricity and energy conversions (PS3.3, CH.PS3.3, PH.PS3.3). These kits will also demonstrate how electricity can create a magnetic field, causing a motor to move (PH.PS2.5, PS.PS2.5). Furthermore, because they are not consumable, they will be able to be used across classes for years to come.
