Social learning is at the heart of Pre-k. I am requesting items that my students can use at centers individually but preferably in pairs or small groups to facilitate this. In using these items they will be building their academic skills while at the very same time, learning to work together, share, collaborate and compromise with their peers!
We need these social learning opportunities in our classroom more than ever before so that children can learn to relate to other children and be successful and happy in a classroom structure. Many of my students this year and, I would imagine, for the next few years to come, have not had the same opportunities to socialize with other children as in pre-pandemic times. Most of them have never been to daycare or Bible class or other community activities that at one time were such a part of normal life. The majority have had very little social or academic stimulation prior to beginning school.
These materials will help with my objective of teaching the children to work together and treat each other respectfully and our classroom materials responsibly and with purpose. Additionally, these items will reinforce numerous Pre-k academic standards for Oklahoma as well as the specific curriculum for our district. My hope is that my students' understanding of the foundational learning we do is enhanced and their curiosity and love of learning are sparked through activities using these materials that are so child friendly and appropriate for their development. I look forward to watching them grow as engineers, mathematicians, scientists, readers and authors who can work constructively with their peers!
