Decodable readers are texts that encourage students to use phonics skills to sound out words rather than simply looking at pictures and guessing words. My current classroom library contains leveled readers which are not beneficial in helping beginning readers to read. A majority of my students are reading below level due to missing the last part of their pre-K year due to OK schools shutting down and many were in and out of the classroom in kindergarten with being quarantined. Thus, many have missed out on getting a true foundation of reading instruction. It is my hope that having the decodable readers available will allow my students to focus more on the letter sound relationship and phonics patterns and help with their decoding skills that will help them to become more fluent and confident readers.
