Using instruments in the elementary music classroom is a great way to supplement learning through application. In math class, students practice doing math problems to apply their skills. In music class, they play instruments, sing, and dance to apply their skills! Classroom instruments not only help to teach musical concepts, but also socio-emotional, science, math, reading, and much more! Egg shakers can help young students learn where the steady beat is in music, as well as fine motor skills and sharing. Large-sized egg shakers help students who have difficulty with motor skills to be fully involved in each lesson. Scarves are used for movement activities for the youngest students to visualize different concepts of music. Other instruments such as maracas, tone blocks, and guiros can help create sound effects for a read-aloud, identify one and two sound words, discover how the science of sound works, and of course, create wonderful music as a class!
