Mathematics instruction extends beyond the daily lesson or required practice problems. Our state standards drive the material I am teaching but the NCTM's standards for mathematical practice determine the way I deliver instruction. Of the eight goals, several will be addressed by this grant funding.
Students proficient in mathematics need to be able to reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2), construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (MP3), model with mathematics(MP4), use appropriate tools strategically (MP5), and look for and make use of structure (MP7).
Many high school students have missed key components of foundational math instruction due to the many challenges stemming from COVID-19. While a heavy emphasis has been placed on digital tools, I want students to understand a variety of tools they can use to learn mathematics. The tools I've requested: chart paper, poster markers, graph paper, Expo markers, and more will provide my students the opportunity to make math visual and share ideas with each other.
