These books not only will continue to improve my students' oral language and literacy, but they will also contribute to their social-emotional development by serving as an important tool: to be mirrors so my students can see themselves represented in a novel and therefore feel they belong and also to serve as windows, so they can see each other and the richness of our diversity.
I believe these books would bring enrichment to my students culturally and academically because having these books to tell their stories for them is one way to promote and develop social and cultural awareness, besides easing their transition from what they know as home to a place where they can't even communicate, in many cases.
Having a set of different titles is the most exciting thing for a teacher. With the sets, guided reading can move to a much more interesting level: literature circles!
