I am a first year teacher and I was amazed by the lack of novels that my school has in place for students. While there are many books in the library, classroom sets are far and few in between. I was left two classroom sets in my classroom. Both of those classroom sets are falling apart and are very outdated. I have had to tape books together more than once.
The books I currently have are so old that my grandparents read them in school. Because of this, all of the books I have picked are modern. It is important that my students can relate and see themselves in the literature they read. If they do not feel represented, they are simply not going to get enough from the experience. Yes, they will read, but they will not be engaged or excited to turn to the next page. All of the novels I have picked are written for my students' age group and aimed to relate to their fears and struggles.
The novels that I have picked out are modern, cover many genres of literature, cover numerous topics, and hit countless areas of the curriculum that my state sets. Because I am a new teacher, you can count on your donation reaching the hands of countless students, for years to come. Having these books gives me the option to send books home with students who have to learn from home during this pandemic. I can also scan these books into the computer and send them to students digitally if we have to do distance learning at any time.
