As an AP Biology teacher, I try to help my students understand the relevancy of understanding the natural world and the affect it has on their daily lives. This subject is of particular importance when we reach the units on ecology and natural resource management. I have always been fascinated by aquaponics and the benefits it has for a sustainable future. I have tried to impart this knowledge and enthusiasm to my students, but it is difficult when they do not have a way to visualize and personalize the process.
The addition of an aquaponics system in our classroom will inspire my students to appreciate and understand the relationship between all living things while also giving them the hands-on ability to care for them and imagine the future of food management by utilizing outside-the-box thinking.
