My students have never had a "normal" school year due to COVID, and this year it was just worsened by the loss of our other first grade teacher to the virus. She was a passionate reading teacher and wanted nothing more than for our students to become people who love to read, knowing that reading will help them in ALL areas. Having fun manipulatives to help them become fluent readers will not only benefit them, but will shine a light on a reading teacher gone too soon.
The first grade students will have center rotations with many of these items that will make it feel like they are playing, which is such a good way for them to want to learn - a goal for every teacher. Reading really is fundamental, and these manipulatives really will put some fun into learning to read.
