COVID-19 has affected our students in various ways, but the biggest area that I witness being affected is the academic area of reading. I work with students with disabilities, but my resources are also accessible for the teachers at my school for classroom interventions as well. I hope that these resources I have requested such as a set of readers and phonics file folder games will help students become more fluent readers and grow to enjoy reading.
These resources will help build on their reading skills and aide in reading interventions for students struggling with reading. Every single subject requires some type of reading at some point, so it is critical that we meet out students where they are and help them grow. I believe the leveled readers will do just that while also giving some variety and selection choices for students as well. Variety and choices are minimal due to the fact that I teach at a small, rural school that has a shared library for grades Pre-K through 12.
The sensory items requested will help add to our calm down spot. Coming back to school after the pandemic and various shut downs has affected some students' mental health and caused anxiety. The calm down spot is an area accessible to students who struggle with anxiousness or have a disability that benefits from sensory play or fidget breaks.
