To help my students learn during the pandemic, I would like to give them each a copy of a novel we read and study during our Civil War unit. Right now, my school only has class sets of the novel which creates problems for students who are quarantined because of COVID. This novel allows students to view the battles of the Civil War from a teenager's viewpoint and really understand the realities of the changing viewpoints throughout the course of the War in amore personal way than through lectures and assignments. The novel study allows the class to have more complex conversations surrounding the Civil War and the impact on ordinary citizens throughout the United States. Having personal copies of the novel for each of the students will allow them to dive deeper into the story, study better for the assignments, and not fall behind should they have to miss school for any extended period of time. This also helps their emotional and mental wellbeing through lessening the snowball effect of assignments that can happen with absences.
