Many special needs students have different sensory needs that impact learning on a daily basis. School closures and disrupted routines during the covid-19 lockdowns have led to an increase in behavioral and mental health challenges among students. This regressions has led to decrease in self-regulation skills. By using sensory tools I can help create a calming space for students. For example using altered light (fluorescent light can be very harsh to a student with sensory issues), tactile sensory discs, balance board, stepping stones to help regulate their nervous system. When a student is stressed or on the verge of a meltdown, teachers can can use the rolling pin calmer to apply deep pressure for students to calm them which will prevent meltdowns and help the student to return school worker more relaxed and focused.
