When most teachers typically think of manipulatives they typically think of math. Using manipulatives is also critical in the development of reading. My focus with this project is to bring life and engagement back to reading.
When the students' hands and minds are working together their brains are more focused. Focused minds have greater retention and greater engagement in the lesson. I will use the manipulatives and games to help my struggling readers with their understanding of the wide variety of phonics skills that must be mastered in the second grade. These can be used in my daily guided reading groups where we focus on phonics, fluency, and comprehension. They can also be utilized in the small flex groups where I have a group of second graders across the grade level to focus on a specific phonics skill.
The development of early literacy is important for future success and it is my goal to help students achieve that success through engaging, meaningful learning.
