As a new teacher, I have had to borrow extensive resources from fellow teachers to create smaller scale labs and demonstrations. Further, many of my students have had limited to no hands-on experience due to pandemic related virtual learning in recent years. I am excited to give those students coming from behind an even more involved laboratory experience. Extra glassware will allow me to build kits to enable distanced and virtual students an opportunity to complete labs at home.
Students exposed to engaging labs learn to apply critical thinking and techniques that extend well beyond a physics or chemistry classroom. In the lab, I foster supportive group dynamics, personal responsibility in the care of equipment, and a safe space to learn from mistakes. Although this is my first year, I can already see what a positive difference a lab makes in my students' understanding, and they are easily the most fulfilling days for a teacher. Thank you for your consideration!
