A classroom is most successful when a teacher can acknowledge that all students bring different strengths and gifts to the classroom, provide high expectations for students, and seek to push students to their greatest potential. I have come to believe flexible seating allows me to do those exact things.
Flexible seating allows for students to take control of their learning and explore their curiosity.
Often in my classroom students work independently utilizing whiteboards, clipboards, and standing desks. The products I’ve selected will give me the floor seating I’m missing and allow students to better engage in their independent work and improve their listening skills. The bean bag chair and floor cushions will allow students to grab a chair and choose their spot to work. The floor table and seats will allow a slightly more structured area for those who are intimidated by flexible seating, but still eager to explore. Lastly, the canopy will generate excitement for independent reading. I have seen tests scores, intrinsic motivation, and positive behavior increase tremendously after switching to flexible seating. I believe these positive increases are due to students exercising choice and experiencing freedom within the classroom!
