The state of Colorado is working hard to ensure that all elementary teachers are knowledgable about current science based reading practices. In learning about science based approaches to reading, I have learned that my students need access to more books that interest them. As Kindergarten students they are just learning to read. Developing a listening center where students are utilize books on tape and books on CD to practice developing print concepts and foundations of reading skills, will allow them to grow as young readers. Listening to stories and seeing the words in print helps make strong brain connections that develop strong readers.
Additionally, books that represent all students is vital to creating an inclusive environment in which all students feel safe and welcome and willing to learn. Providing these resources will help foster a love for reading and stories as students begin their academic journey.
Furthermore, research shows that there is a strong connection between great readers and great writers. Therefore I have also included resources to assist students with disabilities in strengthening their fine motor skills to practice writing within the classroom.
Thank you for your support in creating a literacy rich environment for young learners!
