Having a book a student can call their own will make a big impact on their lives. For instance, my students in 4th grade are reading at a 2nd grade reading level and do not want to check out books from the library on their reading level (because their peers will see they have a low level). My students also come from low-socioeconomic households and cannot provide books to their children. Offering these students a free book that is on their level, takes a lot of pressure out of the equation whilst showing them a great deal of love. It will also share the importance of books in their lives.
Most of my students do not have their basic needs met, and the last thing resources will go towards are books in the home. I know this first hand, because I too came from a low-socioeconomic household with NO BOOKS. I still have the 1 book that was given to me in 2nd grade and it's one of my most prized treasures. I wanted to learn how to read badly, and memorized that book. I believe my students would enjoy the same gift that was given to me.
