Often, students struggle with the concept of reading, especially with the daunting tasks of reading classic literature. These classics, the staples of what we teach, can often be confusing and challenging for students. By using graphic novels, we can not only teach much of what we would with classic novels, but we can also reach a much larger audience. Some students will respond in ways they never would have before, and hopefully, I will be able to create a class that enjoys reading, and is inspired to continue further.
I also believe that graphic novels can be far more relatable to students, often times giving them comfort and helping them on their search for identity. High school is ultimately the most critical time in the shaping of a young adult's identity, and graphic novels can be a way that students can relate and grow as humans.
