I would like to be able to add sets of books to our school library that we can read and discuss together. Hopefully this will increase students' love of reading, along with developing other areas that will be beneficial for them in the future.
These sets of books will help students read for pleasure and interact with others in Book Clubs. Reading for pleasure can increase empathy toward others as students read about situations that they may face. Also interacting with others in Book Clubs over books can help develop oral skills which would hopefully lead to increased social interaction.
Through reading, students are free to choose: the worlds they visit, the characters they meet and life events they go through-all in a book. By fostering the love of reading in our students, reading scores will increase on state mandated testing which benefits the school. Increasing the literacy rate for the community will provide a basis for students to overcome poverty so prevalent in this area.
To be successful with this, the students will need access to a variety of books which is what this project will enable them to do!
