Our school is a public K-8th building in a low income Hispanic neighborhood. As teachers and students in an elementary school, we have worked hard to create "a school within a school" with our middle school students. We have block scheduling, 5 week exploratory classes, an advisory period once a week, and students have five teachers a day (one for each content area). Our students face many environmental challenges in the neighborhood that I serve. Outside of our school walls, there are issues with gangs, drugs, abuse...you name it. Due to the hard work of the students and staff, inside our walls, we have a safe, nurturing community of learners. We provide our students with a wide range of activities both on a daily basis in our classroom, as well as in the form of field trips (8th graders to Washington DC!), in-school programs (dance classes, boys development programs, pep rallies, etc), and after school programs(HS Algebra).
