My school is a Title I which means we are a high poverty school. We are a district charter school which accommodates a student body diverse in every way imaginable- socioeconomically, ethnicity, language, special needs, gifted and talented. I work with 6th graders through 10th graders.
According to Frank Littig, a pioneer in Ukulele education, "A few chords strummed on a ukulele, enough to please a few others beside yourself, does more good in this world than the combined efforts of all the financiers and politicians that ever lived." Students in my classes work together to examine the world they live in. They become aware of global issues and set out on journeys to make an impact upon those issues.
In two of my classes the elderly population has become a focus for many of the students. They want to find ways to reach out to this population and make a difference. I know that by doing this, differences will also be made for themselves.
