My students crave opportunities where they can choose what they do. Obviously, I can't let them decide if they're going to work on reading comprehension or not, but I can let them make choices about what they read. When we run "Literature Circles," students look at the titles of available class sets and choose their own novels.
They do all the work of a normal book unit, but they don't mind doing the work. Why? Because they chose it themselves.
