My sixth grade students this year are yearning to learn! I have students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. I have four students that I know of that have lost their fathers this past year.
Students have had some science in their elementary years, but middle school is when science comes to life for them. They have regular science classes and classes like mine where we study current trends in science and technology. The class I'm teaching (about 80 sixth graders throughout the year), is Energy and the Environment. We are learning together about alternative energy sources and what it takes to makes these alternative sources viable for the common consumer.
The class involves research, presentations, and models of their respective energy source.
