My students are in the autism spectrum. Children with autism typically use behaviors to communicate their wants, needs, anxieties, and frustrations. Behaviors would include fidgeting, rocking, and aggression among others. While behaviors are important communication tools, some behaviors can disrupt learning in a classroom setting. Addressing a child's discomfort is by using sensory devices such as fidgets. These calming devices are used as part of their daily routine as they develop helpful tools that promote peace, tranquility, and calm.
