I teach a class of 22 bright, curious first graders who come from a vibrant neighborhood community. My students bring rich cultural backgrounds to our classroom, with families from Venezuela, Guatemala, Mexico, and families whose roots have been in Albuquerque for generations. This beautiful blend of heritage and experience creates a learning environment full of language, traditions, and stories worth celebrating.
Many of my students are bilingual or are learning English as a second language. They are eager to learn, full of energy, and thrive when given opportunities to explore through hands-on activities and creative expression. They are especially inspired when they see themselves reflected in what they read, write, and create—making culturally responsive learning tools essential to their growth. Every day, they show resilience, joy, and a deep desire to grow—both academically and personally.
